Can you imagine a world without water? Without rain, snow, rivers, or oceans. It would be a world without forests or grasslands, without people, - and without any life whatsoever. Besides oxygen, no other entity is as ubiquitous or essential for life as water. According to estimates, this world contains some 326 million cubic miles of water. That is a cube of water, each side of which is approximately 688 miles. Most of it, a little over 97 percent, is in the oceans which cover some 71% of the earth’s surface. And not only is water the most common compound on earth, it is also the most common compound in the human body. At birth, we are estimated to be made up of some 90% water. At maturity, our bodies are about 70 percent water, with our blood: some 83 percent water, for a total volume of about ten gallons, or about a hundred pounds. Just like the rest of creation, especially as it relates to Israel and the Torah, the entire hydrological cycle, and all that is tied up with it, was not an after thought, something added on after the original creation, but was inherent at the very beginning. The earth is initially described as being engulfed and inundated with water. In fact, much of the first ten verses are related to the formation of water and land. This lecture is devoted to explaining the role of water in the original creation, its special physical qualities that make it a unique matrix for life, and the Cabbalistic secrets that are inherent in the water molecule and ice crystal.
