The Greek Translation of the Torah   $4.00

The Greek Translation: The circumstances & far reaching effects of the Greek translation of the Torah.

Although the Torah is often studied in the original, for thousands of years, translations have become part and parcel of Jewish life. From the Aramaic translation of Onkelos, which is still repeated and studied on a regular basis throughout the world, to the “Ivra Teitch”, the Yiddish translation taught in the “Cheder”, to the most modern English translations, the Torah is still understood and appreciated in translation, as it functions to illuminate and elucidate the text of the Hebrew original. One of the earliest translations, however, the Greek translation that was commissioned by the Egyptian king, Ptolemy, was greeted by the Jewish community with horror and trepidation. The history of translations in general and particularly the story of the Greek translation and the reasons behind its danger to the viability of the Jewish community are the subjects of this lecture.
