With the exception of Tanach, the Bible, and the Talmud, and its commentaries, Rav Yosef Caro's Shulchan Aruch and his magnum opus, his commentary to the Tur, called Bais Yosef, are probably Jewry's most seriously studied works. The story of the creation of the Shulchan Aruch and how it achieved such universal acceptance is the subject of the first half of this lecture. The second half is devoted to one of Rav Yosef Caro’s most regarded contemporaries, a leading disciple of Mahari Bei Rav, Rav Moshe ben Yosef of Trani or the Mabit, as he is commonly called. The life of the Mabit and his relationship with Rav Yosef Caro is the subject of the second half of this lecture.
