One of the most enduring and universal stories of mankind centers around the Great Flood, or Deluge. The story related in the Torah about Noah and his family and the destruction of the rest of humanity in a great Flood is echoed in the traditions of more than two hundred of the world’s cultures, from Indonesia, China, India, Persia, Armenia, Romania, Greece, Lithuania, Norway, Wales, Ireland, Egypt, Sudan, and Syria, to Mexico, Peru, Hawaii, and Polynesia. Of course, many of these narratives vary from the Biblical account, but suprisingly most have maintained a similarity to the Biblical version in its major details. This lecture is devoted to the universal Flood traditions, the details of the Mabul, the Deluge, and to its spiritual and physical causes.
