Civilization. The word brings forth a flood of images. Ancient Egypt, Sumer, Assyria, Babylon, Greece, Rome, Western Europe. Pyramids, Ziggurats, Temples, statues, paintings, music. Although archaeologists and anthropologists have suggested various theories to explain the evolution of civilization and its attendant forms of sophistication: architecture, metallurgy, business and trade, music and art, unique religious worship, these theories are based on very little hard evidence and all assume an evolutionary model for the development of mankind. According to the Torah, all or most of the elements of civilization were developed early on, within the first thousand or fifteen hundred years of mankind, and were actually, in a sense, predestined at the time of creation. The story of the development of civilization and the history of civilizationís founders is the subject of this lecture.
